The National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" began its educational and scientific activities in 1898. Initially, four departments were established: Mechanical, Engineering, Agricultural, and Chemical. Over more than 127 years of development, the university now comprises 25 institutes and faculties. Throughout its history, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has become a foundation for the expansion and strengthening of the network of universities in Kyiv and Ukraine. Currently, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute campus spans an area of about 120 hectares, offering suitable conditions for education, sports, cultural development, scientific and intellectual growth, and recreation. The university has trained over 380,000 specialists, including more than 70,000 during the years of Ukraine's independence.

The university ranks among the top 4% of universities worldwide, according to international QS and Webometrics rankings, and consistently occupies top positions in Ukraine’s higher education institution rankings, such as "Compass" and "TOP-200 Ukraine."

In 1995, the university was granted the status of a National Technical University of Ukraine. In 2007, it was designated as a research university, and since 2010, it holds the status of a self-governing (autonomous) national research university. In 2016, the university was named after its former student, the prominent 20th-century aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky.

The university envisions itself as a world-class research-oriented technical university, committed to training highly qualified (perfect) specialists capable of creating modern scientific knowledge and innovative technologies for the benefit of humanity and securing Ukraine’s rightful place in the global community.

Currently, the university educates nearly 25,000 students, postgraduates, and doctoral candidates, including international students from various countries. Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute employs over 500 professors and more than 1,300 associate professors. Its classrooms and laboratories are equipped with modern technology, and the university actively integrates the latest teaching methods, including computer networks and distance learning. The Scientific and Technical Library is one of the best in the country.

Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is the core organization of the URAN State Information Network for higher educational institutions and institutes of the National Academy of Sciences, which is connected to the European educational network GEANT. The university also hosts the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development and initiated the creation of the "Supercomputing and Data Center" in Ukraine. Scientific developments from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute are regularly recognized with State Prizes of Ukraine in the fields of science and technology. The university collaborates with technical universities from dozens of countries and with international organizations (UN, UNDP, UNESCO, UNIDO, WIPO, NATO, STCU, BSUN, CODATA, ICS, and others).

The university’s scientific and innovative activities integrate educational and research units. This work aims to combine the educational process, scientific research, and production. The main units coordinating these activities are the Department of Innovation and Technology Transfer and the Research Department. Currently, research activities are supported by domestic and international grants, which are especially important during martial law to preserve human resources and strengthen the country's defense capabilities. Every year, scientists carry out nearly 150 state-funded and over 200 contract-based research projects.

Noteworthy is the All-Ukrainian Innovation Ecosystem "Sikorsky Challenge," which unites institutions interested in developing an innovative economy, including universities, research institutions, government agencies, businesses, foundations, and NGOs. Competitions within this ecosystem play a vital role in student science and act as a model and driver of high-tech innovative development for Ukraine’s economy and industry.

Overall, the university's activities focus on shaping the society of the future based on the concept of sustainable development through the internationalization and integration of education, cutting-edge research, and innovative projects. The institution fosters conditions for comprehensive professional, intellectual, social, and creative development at the highest levels of excellence in an educational and scientific environment.

To deepen the economic component of engineering education and meet the needs of Ukraine's national economy for qualified managerial personnel, the Faculty of Management and Marketing (FMM) was established. This unit trains specialists in economics, marketing, and management at all levels of higher education. These specialists are sought after by modern national and international businesses as leaders with a quality economic education, highly qualified managers, and skilled analysts. According to Forbes magazine, the Faculty of Management and Marketing ranked first in 2021 among all management faculties in Ukrainian higher education institutions.
